Near the Intercession Monastery, on the right bank of the Kamenka River, there is the one-domed Church of St. Nicholas.

Short story

At the beginning of the 17th century, on the site of this temple there was a wooden church in the name of the Monks Zosima and Savvaty of Solovetsky, but in 1712 it was replaced by a stone one, which has survived to this day... The construction of the Nikolskaya Church is attributed to Queen Evdokia Lopukhina, who was exiled in 1698 by her husband, Tsar Peter I, to Suzdal. Pokrovsky monastery.

The Tsar quickly lost interest in Evdokia, brought up in the strict rules of Domostroi, and became close to the German Anna Mons, who shared his interest in the Western way of life. To live with Anna, Peter tonsured Evdokia as a nun against her will. In the Intercession Monastery, Evdokia lived as a laywoman and hired several dozen servants with the money of her relatives. At her own expense, Evdokia erected a winter church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker opposite the Holy Gates of the monastery and attached a chapel to it in honor of the Monk Alexy, the heavenly patron of her son, Tsarevich Alexei, who was then still the heir to the throne. Nikolskaya Church (1712) together with the previously built summer Church of Peter and Paul (1694) formed an architectural ensemble. Following the example of this ensemble, many "paired" churches were built in Suzdal from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

Architecture of St. Nicholas Church

Like all winter temples in Suzdal, St. Nicholas Church is distinguished by simple architecture and modest decor. In its composition, it resembles large single-domed Suzdal temples. The building of the church is a cube covered with a four-pitched roof, on which a tall thin drum, topped with an onion dome, rests. The facade of the temple is decorated with zakomaras. From the east, a semicircular apse adjoins the main volume of the church, and from the west - a small porch. Nikolskaya church was rebuilt several times, but in 1954 its original appearance was restored.
